Rats are curious creatures and closely examine human works given an opportunity.
No, we don’t know; there’s however a rumor it had been hanging upside down for years before anyone noticed.
On a related note, yesterday we learned of another interesting piece of art:
Before it was redacted to complete black, and possibly turned upside down, the painting was a set of instructions on how to use art for money laundering.
