For people who absolutely need change, a garden should be an option. Even a window box garden with nothing but a few herbs is fine and a big improvement. Or maybe learn a skill, such as welding, knitting, weaving, or carpentry.
Change for the sake of change is rarely a good idea. Although the frustration is understandable.
