Gratitude
In which Rat has a realization
Patience is an underappreciated virtue.
Rat would like to use this opportunity to say thanks to all 96 humans who have been with us so far.
Now, a story. We live on the ground floor of a quite old house, and occasionally some wild rats come out of our basement. Usually they quickly realize there’s no food available (it all has been safely hidden) and wander away.
Almost two years ago there was an unusual winter cold spell in these parts, and we decided to leave some food for these visitors. I know this is usually not a good idea, because where one rat finds food there are soon dozens of them; but it was really cold and the house stands alone, so we took the risk.
We removed the food once it warmed, and rats (I reckon there were four or five of them at most) soon went away again. When cleaning up, we were surprised to find a couple of small glass beads on the floor. To this day, I have no idea what those were and where the rats brought them from.
Just one of those mysteries that make life amazing.

Your dinner guests appear to have had a working social conscience. Crows do something similar. It's endearing, as well as thought-provoking.
Only 96? We have to fix that!
