I once met the famous TV comedian and host Johnny Carson, on set. Before being introduced to him, he was browsing the day’s newspaper looking for fodder to joke about. And he made some spontaneous comments that were very funny. His genius, like Rat’s, was by keeping informed by present news his jokes would be current, fresh, and nuanced takes. Not like overly polished and dated material.
