It's because stupid IS painful. One exposure to their game/talk/news shows will have the victim searching for anything to ease the nausea, headaches and stress. Sportsball, gluttony and alcohol are also very popular mind-numbing agents.
I haven't had TV for about 10 years, and on the rare occasions I am exposed to it, find the Pharma ads simply appalling.
