I guess NASCAR or F1 could easily lead to the same conclusion.
The risk with representing an observation graphically (or describing it in «graphical» terms) is that it requires quantifiable variables; that can easily lead to quantifying something that’s not really quantifiable – or, as it happened to the cousin, concentrating on easy to quantify variables and overlooking ones that matter.
Perhaps Rat's cousin should occasionally take the laundry out of the washing machine, then he would probably notice the progress (the clean laundry).
