There is a story from my youth, I will share. Two out of state hunters shoot a deer, and are dragging it back to camp when they meet a local going the other way. They are huffing and puffing, and having a terrible time. The local tells them that by dragging it by the hind legs, they are dragging it against the hair, and it would be much easier if they would drag it by the front legs. After they rest up they decide to take his advice. An hour later they stop and one comments to the other how much easier it is this way, to which the other replies “ yes, but we sure are getting a long way from camp.”
You assumed the rat was supine. Perhaps he just wrapped from the top and the egg was slid on its slippery solid surface with the first rat functioning as a harness?
I was skeptical of that author when I saw the partial next column about the King Rat [Rat King], which I encountered previously in Terry Pratchett, as described in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_king
Dragging a rat against the hair is a sure method of rubbing it up the wrong way…

It’s entirely possible the rats lose strength, welcome to the 20th century, it’s all about reducing expectations.
I guess modern rats are a mere shell of their former selves.
just like humans !
I pictured the rat being dragged as egg-side-down. Different coefficient of resistance that way?

I had no idea that rats relocate the proceeds of their thievery before consumption. Do they lay a table for two?
Bowling eggs might strike success
