Rat: — Solipsists think the world is just an illusion and only exists in one’s mind.
Cousin: — That’s quite an extreme view. I’m surprised the government hasn’t yet tried to ban it.
Rat: — Well… why would one who thinks the government is not real care about a ban​?

While there probably were philosophers who entertained consistent solipsism, we know nothing about them, because they necessarily must have come to a conclusion that writing books for an illusion is pointless. As for those who did write books, solipsism is just a lemma in a bigger philosophical (Descartes) or theological (Berkeley) argument, and it’s stated just to be refuted afterwards.
