We've had pet rats, and yes they are delightful and interactive.
Unfortunately they're also little tumor factories.
There are breeds of laboratory rats (e.g. Sprague-Dawley) that have very high incidence of tumors. Some rats in pet shops might be descendants of lab rats, at least in part; especially albinos.
That's always been my understanding. Ours weren't white.
Like snakes, rats have been unfairly demonized. Both are wonderful creatures.
