I have a theory. Maybe the confusion exists to distract us from the fact that nobody is actually steering this ship. The crew has scarpered, which is extra confusing because the rats are usually the first to go.
The poor darlings need to preserve space in which they can slither and hiss, and be true to themselves.
A permanent state of confusion and dislocation creates freedom of maneuver. Chaos is a ladder.
