My, what pink ears you have - and it looks like you've had plenty of cheese!

When I had a rat invade my house, I became convinced that it was smarter than I was. Given that, and the propensity of the current humans to dumb themselves down with AI, your future scenario seems plausible.

There's a science fiction novel called "Evolution" by Stephen Baxter where humans are succeeded by rodents, who then enslave what's left of the humans

I raised hundreds of rats when I was a kid. During this time I only was bitten a couple of times (old males can get pissy, perhaps it was dementia) while meanwhile I gradually developed a healthy mistrust of other children, as a class, so you may well be correct

I've been noticing for a while that things are not going perfectly fine, as they used to, and I deem as highly credible that third panel.

I doubt there are multiple varieties even in the year 42350. Perhaps rats are too promiscuous for speciation to happen without interference from outside.

Notice the teeth have shifted as well. ( btw, I come from the present) ;)

“upper incisors visible” is a traditional cartoon stereotype; “lower incisors visible” is more reaiistic when a rat is looking at something not directly under his nose :)
